Community Service
Rolling Oaks Rescue is a non-profit organization that rescues orphan foals at an early age due to their mothers being leased out to support other foals in need. During our Community Service Program, you will learn and experience unconditional love for an animal while providing daily care of the foal. This program is ideal for someone that is interested in horses but is unable to keep one of their own, it's an opportunity for 4H clubs to gain additional knowledge about equines and hands-on experiences. For the older adult, a chance to fulfill the childhood dream or a current desire to experience taking care of an equine buddy. Learn, and gain experiences while caring for the babies, and feel the love the foals have to offer!
Once you are accepted into the program you will be assigned to help care for two or three babies to ensure they start their life out on the right hoof. You will be responsible for:
1.) Assist with feeding.
Some of our babies may need bottle-fed, while others of our babies may be already able to drink from buckets. All the babies will be given a daily supply of hay and a unique mixture of milk pellets and grain. This combination will help them to develop strong muscles and bones.
2.) Clean their stalls daily.
This includes mucking their stalls and replacing it with fresh clean bedding. Babies love clean stalls to stretch out in and rest after playing.
3.) Providing loving hands-on care.
This includes gently brushing and bathing if necessary babies get messy sometimes. And most importantly, getting the babies used to human touch so they are not frightened by people or things around them.
4.) Daily exercising.
They do need to stretch their little legs. Once they get to know you, they can play tag or follow the leader, you can teach them to follow you on a lead rope.
5.) Special needs care.
Some of our babies may need a little extra loving care. You may need to stay with them just a little bit longer so that they don’t feel so alone.
